What Is Bitcoin Halving?
The fourth Bitcoin halving was completed on April 2024. It is difficult to predict the exact date of the next halving as it depends on the block height. Since halving happens every 210,000 blocks, the next Bitcoin halving is expected to occur in 2028.
What Is a Bitcoin Halving ?
Bitcoin halving is a preprogrammed event that cuts the block reward for miners by 50%. Occurring every 210,000 blocks (roughly 4 years), it continues until the max supply of 21 million BTC is reached.
Bitcoin Halving History
Since its 2009 launch, Bitcoin’s mining reward has undergone four halving events. The first, in November 2012, reduced the reward from 50 BTC to 25 BTC. Subsequent halvings occurred in July 2016, dropping it to 12.5 BTC, and in May 2020, to 6.25 BTC. The latest halving, in April 2024, further decreased the reward to 3.125 BTC per block. These periodic reductions are fundamental to Bitcoin’s scarcity and its ability to control inflation, ensuring the total supply does not exceed 21 million coins and upholding its inherent deflationary design.
What Happens When Bitcoin Halves?
When Bitcoin halves, the mining reward per block drops by 50%. This slows the creation of new BTC, reducing inflation. Halvings enforce Bitcoin’s fixed supply cap of 21 million coins.

Does Bitcoin Halving Affect Altcoins ?
Bitcoin halving events draw significant attention to the broader cryptocurrency market, including altcoins. These events can foster investor optimism regarding altcoins’ potential price growth, often leading to increased investment and subsequent price appreciation. Furthermore, as Bitcoin’s mining reward diminishes, some miners may pivot to altcoins offering more favorable rewards.
As the fourth Bitcoin halving approaches, investors and analysts are closely watching its potential market impact. With BTC already exceeding $73,000 by late March 2024, this event holds significance beyond Bitcoin’s price action – it may shape broader crypto market trends and industry evolution.
