India's LPG Losses Decrease to 188 Rupees

India's state-owned oil companies have reported a decrease in liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) retail losses to 188 rupees per 14.2 kg cylinder in August, down from 500 rupees in July. This reduction in losses is attributed to an expansion of LPG supply sources and adjustments in production and distribution by the government, as India relies on imports for about 60% of its LPG consumption. The government has directed refineries and petrochemical facilities to convert their propane and butane allocations into the LPG supply chain, resulting in a roughly 25% increase in domestic LPG production. To compensate for the unrecovered LPG losses, the government has approved a support plan worth 30,000 crore rupees and established a committee to monitor non-domestic LPG distribution. The booking interval for domestic LPG has been extended from 21 to 25 days, with normal delivery taking about 2.5 days. By the end of June, it was reported that India had secured the necessary quantities of crude oil and LPG, with refiners expanding their supply sources to the U.S., Venezuela, and Oman. However, the reduction in losses does not alleviate the government's financial burden, as LPG subsidies and unrecovered costs exceed 59,000 crore rupees. The Indian LPG market remains influenced by import routes and the government's price support structure.
