Glamsterdam’s key changes

EIP-7732

Enshrined proposer-builder separation

Brings block proposer-builder coordination into the protocol, reducing trust dependencies and allowing more time for data propagation.

Original proposal
EIP-7928

Block-level access lists

Provides state-access and outcome information in advance, laying the groundwork for parallel execution and more efficient synchronization.

Original proposal
EIP-8037

State creation cost changes

Adjusts fees for account, contract and storage operations to better reflect the cost of long-term data retention by nodes.

Transaction fees and L2 impact

How could transaction fees change?

Plans include reducing base gas for ETH transfers and adjusting charges for new accounts, contracts and storage. Final fees still depend on network demand, and changes differ by operation.

Will L2 networks upgrade at the same time?

Each L2 follows its own adoption schedule. Check announcements from the network you use to see whether new mechanisms are adopted and how fees and services change.

What should I do?

Your ETH does not need to be exchanged.

A protocol upgrade does not require transferring assets to an “upgrade address.” Follow service announcements from your wallet or trading platform.

  • Deposits, withdrawals and maintenance follow platform announcements.

Also watch your L2’s adoption plans.

An L1 upgrade and L2 adoption of new mechanisms are separate milestones. Users should check network announcements; developers should assess the impact using their own application workloads.

  • Check access lists, state costs and client behavior.
  • Validate compatibility and application performance in a test environment.

Prepare upgrades using official client release notes.

Verify compatible versions for execution, consensus and validator clients, distinguishing testnet from mainnet requirements.

  • Monitor backups, synchronization and block proposals.
  • Once the mainnet date is confirmed, act according to the relevant network’s schedule.

Frequently asked questions

When will Glamsterdam launch on Ethereum mainnet?

The mainnet date has not been announced. Sepolia activated the upgrade on October 6, 2026. The Hoodi upgrade has been postponed, with no new activation date announced. Follow official Ethereum protocol announcements for mainnet timing.

Do I need to exchange my ETH after the upgrade?

No. Your existing ETH remains usable. The upgrade will not ask you to send funds to an “upgrade address” or provide a seed phrase. Treat such requests as potential scams.

What should wallet or exchange users do?

Ordinary ETH holders usually need not take action. Follow announcements from your wallet or exchange, and use the relevant service notices for any deposit/withdrawal pauses or network maintenance.

Will Glamsterdam lower gas fees for every transaction?

Not necessarily. Plans include lowering base gas for ETH transfers while adjusting fees for new accounts, contracts and storage. Final fees still depend on network demand.

Will Glamsterdam automatically change L2 fees?

Not necessarily. Each L2 has its own upgrade and adoption plans. Fee changes also depend on whether new mechanisms are adopted and on network demand. Check your L2’s announcements.

What should nodes and validators prepare in advance?

Follow official client release notes and verify compatible execution, consensus and validator client versions. Upgrade according to the relevant network’s requirements; testnet versions and dates cannot be applied directly to mainnet.
